The principle behind laser hair removal is the use of long wavelength energy to target melanin within hairs in the deeper layers of the skin, disrupting the follicles’ ability to regenerate and permanently reducing hair growth with each session. Common sites for unwanted hair removal include the face, neck, underarms, back, legs, arms, bikini and full Brazilian treatment areas.

At Tribeca Park Dermatology, we utilize three laser/light systems for permanent hair reduction — the InMode Diolaze laser, the Sciton Profile 1064 Nd:YAG and the Sciton Forever Bare BBL System. With 3 devices to choose from, we can offer the most effective treatments available for each individual based on their skin and hair type, and we can safely perform treatments on all skin tones. Hair reduction is seen after the first session but for full results a series of 5-8 treatments is usually needed, spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Unwanted facial and body hair is a common problem that can be a source of distress for both men and women. Dermatologists use lasers and light sources to safely and effectively treat larger areas of unwanted hair with minimal patient discomfort and fewer complications than other hair-reduction methods. Most lasers are equipped with a cooling device that reduces the discomfort from the laser light and also protects the top layer of skin from excessive heating and potential changes in pigmentation.

How Does It Work?

Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) devices send specific concentrated beams of light through the skin that are absorbed by the melanin (dark) pigment present in the hair follicle shafts. Because hair grows in cycles, repeated treatments are necessary to destroy the hair follicles. In general, three or more treatments are required to achieve permanent hair growth reduction.

Will it work for me?

Darker hair responds best to laser hair removal. Lighter-colored hair is least responsive, but topical medications can be used in an effort to increase effectiveness. Be sure to avoid tanning or sunless tanners and to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen for up to six weeks prior to treatment.

Are there any side effects?

The most common side effects include discomfort, swelling, and redness that last one to three days. Other possible side effects include blistering, herpes simplex outbreaks, bacterial infections and temporary skin lightening or darkening (especially in patients with skin of color or those with tans). Patients are instructed to avoid sun exposure and to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher following the procedure.

What is the benefit of Diolaze?

Unlike traditional methods (waxing, shaving, bleaching or using depilatory creams), Diolaze laser hair removal impacts the root of the problem, rather than offering a temporary solution. Traditional methods will require treatment forever, while Diolaze only requires a few sessions. Most patients immediately notice a significant reduction in hair growth after a few sessions and eventually smooth and hair-free skin.

What is Diolaze?

Diolaze is an advanced laser hair removal procedure that safely and gently eliminates unwanted hair. Diolaze has one of the largest treatment spot sizes, making treatments convenient and fast. The combination of efficacy, patient comfort and
speed makes Diolaze the leader in laser hair removal.

Benefits
  • Diolaze laser hair removal impacts the root of the problem, rather than offering a temporary solution.
  • Only requires a few sessions.
  • Most patients immediately notice a significant reduction in hair growth after a few sessions and eventually smooth and hair-free skin.

Typically six to eight treatments about 4 to 6 weeks apart are needed to achieve 90% permanent hair loss. Why only 90%? The body will always continue to produce new hair follicles that were not around during your treatment. However, usually this will be a few strands of fine, fair, baby-like hair.

FAQs

How does Diolaze work?

During laser treatment, a diode laser beam passes through the skin towards hair follicles.  The penetrating energy then heats up the root of the hair, which in turn prevents future hair growth.

Does it hurt?

Diolaze has a built in skin cooling surface which is one of the largest for all hair removal devices.  This makes treatment more comfortable than other devices, with most patients noting that Diolaze is virtually painless.

Why do I need multiple treatments to achieve hair removal?

As with all laser hair removal methods, Diolaze requires a series of treatments. Laser hair removal works best when hair follicles are in their mature stage, however, at any given time, your hair is in various stages of growth.

How many sessions are required?

With each treatment, hair is reduced and best results are observed after four to six sessions.  The number of sessions will differ depending on your hair color, hair type, body area, and skin tone.

Which areas of the body can be treated?

Diolaze can be safely used on most areas of the body that have unwanted hair. Most commonly treated areas include: bikini, legs, arms, chest, back, shoulders, stomach, neck, chin and sideburns.
